A Coffee-Caffeinated Kick

Whether you drink it black, with cream, or with cream and 13 Stevias, coffee is a magical elixir that fuels our creative grind. It puts a pep in our step when we start our mornings. It provides that spark when you hit that 2 PM wall. Most importantly, it creates community amongst creators and provides an instant connection.Today, we're going to finish the year strong—as strong as my black coffee—with a 3-part Coffee Caffeinated Kick series.I want this series to function like audio coffee—to give you an extra boost in the AM or PM when you sip your coffee and get after it.I've always bean a lover of puns and wordplay. That's why each episode's theme will be a coffee pun with episode artwork drawn on a coffee cup. It'll be a nice brew of humor and motivation to help you feel energized and grounded—see what I did there?Whether you buy your beans ground or grind your own, part one of this series is titled Good Things Happen to Those Who Grind. If you struggle with the lack of time, money, and motivation then this one is for you.

Good Things Happen to Those Who Grind

I want to start each of these episodes with a quote to stimulate your thinking:

“Our outer world will always be a reflection of our inner world. Our level of success is always going to parallel our level of personal development. Until we dedicate time each day to developing ourselves into the person we need to be to create the life we want, success is always going to be a struggle to attain.” ― Jim Rohn

(Hal Elrod - The Miracle Morning: The Not-So-Obvious Secret Guaranteed to Transform Your Life: Before 8AM)

If you're a listener of this show, you take action and invest in your craft and personal development. We all desire to be successful, but this quote really makes you realize that your personal development determines your success.

Here's a great definition of Personal Development: It is a lifelong process. It is a way for people to assess their skills and qualities, consider their aims in life, and set goals in order to realize and maximize their potential.

This show is fuel for your mind and creative grind. This podcast gives you the tools and mindset to help you win the internal and external struggles.

You can't sit around expecting good things to happen.

When I say good things happen to those who grind, I mean opportunities and luck come to those who make the effort and sacrifices to develop themselves and their dreams.

Many of the questions I get through my on-boarding email and Private Facebook Group (The Perspective-Collective) pertain to lacking time, money, and motivation. Let's address each one individually.

5 Ways to Make Time for Your Creative Side Hustle & Get Results

Time

Where are You Spending Your Time?

  • There are 168 hours in a week: (40-hour day job + 56 hours of sleep if you get 8 hours each day...most of us don't)

    • That leaves 72 hours left

    • Jun 28, 2016 - Business Insider: the report shows that the average American adult watches over five hours of TV per day. The study also breaks down weekly time and finds that the average adult watches nearly 35 hours of TV (live and DVR) per week.

    • State of Online Gaming 2018 market research: People who play video games spend an average of nearly six hours each week playing. Gamers 18-25 spend the most time, at more than seven hours each week.

    • Entrepreneur.com: If you’re like the average person, you’ll spend more than five years of your life on social media—five years and four months to be exact. That breaks down to nearly two hours (116 minutes) a day spent on YouTube, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and Twitter.

 How are You Showing Up?

  • Show up and pour a little bit in your dream each day

    • In her book, Craft a Life You Love,Amy Tangerine mentions: “Just 15 minutes a day equals one work day a month!"

    • (8 hours x 60 minutes = 480 minutes) (15 min x 31 days = 465 minutes)

    • I want to challenge you to do 30 minutes

    • Schedule your success

      • Find and create pockets of time in your day around work and family responsibilities

        • Wake up early, lunch breaks, 10-minute breaks, shower, bathroom

        • Don't neglect the bigger picture: health, personal development, and relationships—these include exercise, meditation, meal prep

          • These all help you find more success on your creative grind

Money

You don't need the fanciest and most expensive tools to get started and thrive.Hell, you don't even need an expensive college degree or a masters to make a statement if your portfolio shows you can do the work. There are online educational outlets like Skillshare, Lynda, or Creative Live that help you learn professional skills at a fraction of the cost.Creativity is about problem-solving—so be resourceful. Use what you have already and expand your tools as grow. For example, you want to learn calligraphy but don't have a lot of money. Grab yourself a cheap Crayola knock off marker and seek out my buddy Colin Tierney's FREE Calligraphy Community to master the basics. Between markers and paper, you're starting your calligraphy career for $10 or less.Honestly, The fanciest thing I own and invested in is an iPad Pro. My MacBook Pro is from 2010, and I shoot all my videos and photos off my iPhone. I have the Adobe Creative Suite with an extra license through work. I buy my Microns, sketchbooks, and other tools when they are on sale.Don't let money deter you from grinding. With the basic resources and access to a smartphone with free social media platforms like Instagram, you're more than capable of making some waves.

Motivation

My coworker always says she wishes she could buy motivation, drive, and discipline in a pill. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way.One of the biggest things I've learned since starting Perspective-Collective in 2014 is that motivation comes from the act of doing.Sure, I'm inspired at times, but I don't get motivated to do something until I've done the hard part of getting started. Just from the simple act of starting, I'm more motivated to finish.I wasn't motivated to get up early to write this series. Yet, when I started it, I was motivated to finish it once I saw it all coming together. It's the same with episode artwork and pretty much any essential thing I attack that moves my business forward. When you see progress and build momentum, it's easier to make the time to start and the motivation follows.Just get started and be consistent. Good things will happen.

Grind it Out

It takes a special breed of person to want to clock out of their day job and clock into their dream. If it were easy, then everyone would do it.Use time, money, and motivation to your advantage and invest in your creative grind AND personal development.Listening to this podcast is a good start, but you already have the tools you need to take it to the next level.
